The Formation of Gloucester Excelsior Band

Four trombone players got together forming a Quartet for contesting in 1953,
the four being George Sparkes, Bill Sparkes, Peter Hopkins and Mauris
Hawken. Bill Sparkes remains a member of the band to this day.

The success of the quartet is shown by their winning of 47 cups from
competing in 52 contests.

Around 1956 the Quartet members decided to form a band, calling it the
Gloucester British Legion. After several years this name was changed to
Glevum Brass. Eight years later the name was changed again to Gloucester
Excelsior Band, as it stands today.
